Top 10 Avatars of Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone is today one of the highest paid Bollywood actresses. She has wowed the audiences with her beauty, intelligence and stellar performances in the movies. It is hard to believe that the actress on the peak of success today was once called expressionless, cold and lacking in acting skills. In her short journey in the film industry she has seen both good and bad days. Her films have bombed at the box office and critics have severely criticized her performances. She has also seen great days with high grossing films and award winning performances. We list out the 10 films and performances that can be called the turning points of her career.

10. Karthik Calling Karthik.

The role of Shonali Mukherjee was perhaps the only saving grace of this movie. Deepika’s performance in this otherwise forgetful psycho-thriller with a thin storyline was praised well by the critics and liked by the audience. It is a tribute to her abilities as an actress that even run-of-the-mill roles like an office worker are raised to the level of an art-form. Though the film did not do well commercially, Deepika’s power-performance set up base for her later achievements.

9. Chandni Chowk to China.

It had Deepika again playing a double role after Om Shanti Om. The role of a half Indian and half Chinese heroine namely Sakhi (Ms. TSM) and Suzy (Meow Meow) is not easy. More difficult is to play two sisters, who are as different as chalk and cheese. Not only that confusion known no galore when she has to romance or fight the same hero that is Akshay Kumar while playing the two roles. She also learned and used the Japanese martial art jujutsu is this movie. That the film did not do very well commercially does not take away Deepika’s contribution to it.

8. Bachna Ae Haseeno.

Did Deepika excel in this role? It is easy to dismiss her in the crowd of female leads in this movie. But we still choose it in our list, as the role of Gayatri that she played in this movie represents her true self to a great extent. Though she did not dominate the movie that was focused on the male protagonist, she played well the role of the anchor in the choppy waters of hero’s life, who turns around his life, for good.

7. Cocktail.

She got a choice, and what did Deepika do? She picked up the tougher of the two roles of female leads, to challenge her own acting abilities. She worked on the role of Veronica Malaney and turned it as the example of a bold, confident modern day woman who has a mind of her own. Free of inhibitions and clear in her mind what she wants from life, Veronica is the new-age heroine who is unafraid to experiment with sex and drugs. Yet she retains the darker side of womanhood that is jealousy and possessiveness. No other actress could have done justice to this script except Deepika.

6. Love Aaj Kal.

Deepika sensitively and thoughtfully played the role of Meera Pandit in this modern day romantic story. She teamed up with Saif Ali Khan in the story that lacked the pace of some of their other movies together. Still it was one of the highest grossing movies of the year and her performance was praised by critics. She played the role of a girl torn between career and love with élan and effortless ease.

5. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

With perfection and mastery, Deepika played the role of the shy bookwork Naina Talwar. The girl behind thick glasses, who could barely speak was like a touch-me-not flower that came in contact with outgoing Ranveen Kapoor. Deepika was convincing in the role and lived her part to the perfection. In stark contrast was the second half of the movie; in which she played the other side of the same girl, complete with choli, lengha and dances who overshadows and mellows the character of Ranveer.

4. Race 2.

Deepika has certainly benefited to be in the club of winners and this is one movie that made everyone happy. Except of course the critics, who criticized everything – from the storyline to the performances. The people just love the fast moving flick with able direction. Deepika exuded oomph in the movie and used her long and sexy legs to maximum effect. Her bikini shots, lovemaking scenes all but overshadowed Ms Sri Lanka, Jaqueline Fernandez. Don John Abraham’s sister Elena‘s role was brought to life by Deepika, who looked dangerous and desirable in the movie.

3. Om Shanti Om.

At number 3 we have Deepika’s debut Hindi movie, where she played the double roles of a 80s (fictional) actress Shantipriya and wannabe present day actress Sandy. The poise, grace, beauty and above all the flawless acting of Deepika in her debut won her the best debut actress trophy at the Filmfare. As one critic had remarked, to perform while standing in the same frame as Shahrukh that too in your debut film is by no means an easy task. It is tribute to her acting that the people recall this movie more for her performance than the storyline, music or direction.

2. Chennai Express.

Deepika can finally command the price and roles of her liking; thanks to the runaway success of the movie. She teamed up with Shahrukh Khan again after Om Shanti Om and their onscreen chemistry had the audience going ga-ga. She resembled young Hema Malini in this movie and her adopted south Indian accent to speak Hindi was convincing. She beautifully performed the role of Meenalochini Azhagusundaram, a runaway daughter of a powerful Tamil Don. She held her own even with the film’s focus on the saleable Shahrukh and director Rahul Shetty’s powerful direction and emerged as a winner.

1. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.

Competing against the best of the best, Deepika won the best actress Filmfare award for this film. Based on Shakespearian tragedy drama of Romeo and Juliet, the film was a box office and critical success. The actress’ portal of the Guajarati Juliet, and the character Leela Sanera’s journey from a romantic girl to a female don showed her in various colours of the spectrum. Her on-screen chemistry with co-actor Ranveer Singh and her flawless acting was appreciated with audience and critics alike. It was called her best performance till date.

Deepika started with the advantage of playing the female lead and had a dream debut opposite the reigning King Khan of Bollywood. But she has worked hard and consistently not only to retain the advantage but raise the bar to the next level.
