It is no secret that T20 is a form of cricket that is heavily in favour of batsmen but over the past 6 seasons of the IPL plenty of bowlers have successfully held their own against marauding batsmen and in this post you can have a quick look at ten of the highest wicket takers in the IPL.

10. Albie Morkel

This one might come as a surprise since Albie Morkel does not usually bowl the full quota of 4 overs these days, however in the initial years of the IPL he used to be the opening bowler for the Chennai Super Kings and had picked up plenty of wickets. He usually bowls at an average pace but keeps the line and length as tight as possible to stifle the batsman and that approach has brought him 76 wickets. Although the Super Kings have not retained him this time, it is expected that he would be able to do well for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, his new team. 10

9. Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh is one of the modern greats, irrespective of the fact that he is no longer India’s chosen number 1 spinner in any form of cricket and one of the biggest reasons for his stupendous success throughout his career has been his adaptability. He has played in all the editions of the IPL and has provided an excellent account of himself as one of the best spinners in the world. Over the 6 editions of the IPL he has picked up 78 wickets, same as Steyn, but he finds himself at number 9 because the South African has done it in less games. 9

8. Dale Steyn

You should not be surprised to see the best fast bowler in this list and even though he has not played as many games as the others on this list, Dale Steyn comes in at number 8 with his total of 78 wickets in 69 games, the least among the top 10. He is the complete fast bowler, who can swing the ball both ways at searing pace and can also trouble the best of batsman with steep bounce from an awkward length; as a result it is not really a wonder that he has a strike rate of 20 and average of 21.64 in the IPL. 8

7. Dwayne Bravo

When the Chennai Super Kings decided to retain Dwayne Bravo in their squad ahead of the IPL auctions in 2014, not many were surprised by that move since he had proven himself to be one of the best all rounders in the business and as a bowler he has been one of the go to men for the Super Kings whenever they needed a wicket. Bravo does not bowl at a great pace but has plenty of variations including the fabled slower bouncer that helps him in foxing the best of batsmen on a regular basis and it is no wonder that h has bagged 79 wickets in the IPL. He is expected to continue in the same vein this season as well. 7

6. Piyush Chawla

The Indian leg spin bowler from Moradabad comes in at number 6 for being a prolific wicket taker for the Kings XI Punjab for as long as the IPL has existed. Chawla became an overnight sensation when he clean bowled Sachin Tendulkar in a domestic game and in the six seasons of the IPL he has brought all his variations into play in order to provide his team with timely wickets. He has taken 84 wickets so far in the IPL and now that he has moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders, you can expect him to be among the wickets due to the turning pitches offered by the Eden Gardens. 6

5. Vinay Kumar

In at number 4 is Indian pace man R. Vinay Kumar, who was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders this year in the auctions and he moves to the Kolkata based franchise after 6 fruitful years with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Vinay Kumar is primarily a swing bowler but over the years he has developed all the variations that a bowler needs in order to survive in T20 cricket and this ability to adapt has fetched him 84 wickets over the past 6 seasons. It is expected that he would be serve the Kolkata Knight Riders with distinction as well in the years to come. 5

4. Pragyan Ojha

It is perhaps due to the fact that Indian cricketers play most of the IPL games that they end up taking most of the wickets and on that note Pragyan Ojha comes in at number 4 with an excellent haul of 85 scalps. He has represented Deccan Chargers and the Mumbai Indians and has played a part in the title winning campaigns of both those teams. When on song, Ojha can be the ideal left arm off spinner who can not only turn the ball but can also flummox the batsman with his flight and loop. Additionally, he can also bowl a lethal arm ball. He is a bowler who could again prove to be devastating in the 2014 edition of the IPL. 4

3. R P Singh

Next in Indian cricket’s forgotten man R P Singh who turned out to be quite a handful in the IPL over the past 6 seasons during his stints with the Deccan Chargers, Kochi Tuskers, Mumbai Indians and lastly the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Over the past six season he picked up a total of 87 wickets with his sustained pace and the ability to swing the ball at all times. However, his poor economy rate of 7.84, below average fielding and nonexistent batting skills makes him a one dimensional player, which is perhaps why he was not picked by any of the teams in the 2014 auctions. 3

2. Amit Mishra

You might be a bit surprised to see the Indian leg spinner at number 2 but the cold hard facts revealed by the numbers cannot be denied and coming close on the heels of Mallinga is Amit Mishra with a total of 95 wickets so far. Although Mishra has not got as many opportunities for the Indian team, it cannot be denied that he is a leg spinner of rare quality and has the ability to bamboozle the best of batsmen with his vast array of tricks. As was the case in the last season, Mishra will turn out for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 edition of the tournament. 2

1. Lasith Mallinga

There are very few fast bowlers who can be called a wizard but Sri Lankan fast man Lasith Mallinga is certainly one of them and with a haul of 103 wickets in the IPL so far he is the top ranked bowler in this list. He has been one of the biggest match winners over the course of the six seasons of the IPL due to the incredible variety that he has in his armoury and in addition to his ability of drying up the runs, he can also pick up wickets regularly. It is not really a wonder that the Mumbai Indians have retained him for the 2014 season as well. 1

So, that was a short run down of the top 10 wicket takers in the IPL. Hopefully you have enjoyed it. Do look out for the some of the bowlers mentioned here, since most of them are expected to be among the wickets in the 2014 edition. desc 670x293
