1. Mother of all campaigns: Superstar Rajinikanth seen with Narendra Modi

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, clad in traditional south Indian dhoti-shirt attire and shaking hands with the film actor and cultural icon Rajinikanth during a visit to the actor’s residence on 13 April 2014 is a banner that cannot easily go unnoticed in Chennai these days. Namo met the actor while campaigning for ongoing parliamentary elections in Chennai.Though the legendary actor with a huge fan base has denied any political significance of the meeting but political observers are considering this as a good support to BJP on 24 April 2014 when Tamil Nadu goes to poll. The poll results will show the effect of Rajnikant fan club embracing the slogan- “abki baar Modi sarkar.”‘With Rajinikanth ji’, the tweet from Namo’s personal handle, considering the stupendous following of these two popular figures, twitter universe went abuzz with their own calculations about what this meeting could result in. However, several opinion polls have projected that the BJP will not fare well in the state. In 1996, Rajinikanth’s statement — “Even God can’t save Tamil Nadu if you vote for Jayalalithaa of AIADMK” — worked wonders as DMK-Tamil Maanila Congress alliance swept the state polls. In 1998, though the superstar expressed his support for BJP, the DMK-BJP alliance could win only a modest 9 of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu.  In 2004, when Rajinikanth asked the fans not to vote for Pattali Makkal Katchi, it won all the contested Lok Sabha seats.

Though the actor has taken an apolitical stand in last ten years, BJP insiders feel even if Rajinikanth doesn’t publicly endorse BJP, the meeting itself would turn out to be a support statement for the party which is trying to gain a foothold in the state.
